It is very important to recognize the warning signs of anorexia in order to try to nip it in the bud and prevent serious health consequences. Many of the warning signs of anorexia overlap with the diagnostic criteria. Warning signs of anorexia include; dramatic weight loss, preoccupation with weight, food, calories, fat grams and dieting. Other warning signs of anorexia are: refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food, frequent comments about feeling “fat” or overweight despite weight loss, anxiety about gaining weight or being “fat,” denial of hunger, development of food rituals such as eating foods in certain orders, excessive rearranging of food on a plate, consistent excuses to avoid mealtimes or situations involving food. Additional warning signs of anorexia are consistent excuses to avoid mealtimes or situations involving food, excessive rigid exercise regimen-despite weather, fatigue, illness, or the need to “burn off “ calories taken in. More warning signs of anorexia include withdrawal from usual friends and activities and general behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting and control of food are becoming primary concerns. Even though I developed anorexia before it was w ell known disease, my mother was astute enough to pick up the warning signs of anorexia.
In my book Poisoned Love, I allude to the warning signs of anorexia. In me, the warning signs of anorexia were the sudden development of a preoccupation with my weight and caloric intake.
