What is anorexia nervosa? Anorexia is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes and eating disorder characterized by low body weight, and body image distortion with an obsessive fear of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia are known to control their body weight by voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. What is anorexia nervosa? It is a complex condition, involving neurobiological, psychological, and sociological components. In Poisoned Love, I talk about the fact that when I developed anorexia, I had no idea what is anorexia nervosa.
What is anorexia nervosa as defined by the DSM-IV-TR? To be diagnosed as having anorexia nervosa, according to the DSM-IV-TR, a person must display:
In my book, Poisoned Love, I discuss the fact that I had all these symptoms of anorexia.
1. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above normal weight for age and height.
2. Intense fear of gaining weight
3. Disturbance in the way in which one’s body or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
4. The absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles.
5. Or other eating related disorders.
What is anorexia nervosa? The DSM-IV-TR specifies two subtypes:
-Restricting type- during the current episode of anorexia nervosa, the person has not regularly engaged in binge-eating or purging behavior
-Binge-Eating Type or Purging Type: during the current episode of anorexia nervosa, the person has regularly engaged in binge eating or purging behavior i.e. self-induced vomiting, over-exercise, or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas.
